The company is a Spanish-based, privately held business engaged in the production and supply of meat products. It was formed in 2006 through the combination of Smithfield Foods's Groupe Jean Caby subsidiary and the former Sara Lee European meats business. The company's corporate office is located in the city of Madrid, Spain. It is a 50/50 joint venture between Smithfield Foods Inc., the world's largest pork producer and processor, and investment funds controlled by Oaktree Capital Management LLC, an investment management company. The company serves Europe's modern and traditional retail trade as well as a large and growing number of foodservice customers. In June 2008, the company ceased to exist when it merged with Campofrío Alimentación, the leading player in the meat sector in Spain and a benchmark food company in Spain and Europe.
