Hullas del Coto Cortés, S.A. is an enterprise primarily involved in the exploitation of mineral coal deposits and the commercialization of the extracted minerals. The company operates both an open cast and a subterranean mining complex situated at the Cerredo deposit in the Rangos Valley. In 2005 alone, the company has extracted a total of 481,288 metric tons of coal. In addition, the company is engaged in the production and commercialization of electrical energy, exploitation of forests and wood products and providing all types of technical and consultant services for the above activities. The company is engaged in the construction of commercial buildings and warehouses/houses for lease and/or sale. Almost all of the company's sales are to the electric power sector in Spain, where coal is the most used fuel for generation (composing more than 30 percent of the total). The remaining one percent is sold for domestic use and to various small industries. The company's subsidiary undertakings include Espato de Villabona S.A., a mining company in which the Company held a 99.82 percent interest, and Lignitos de Castellon S.A., a mining company in which the Company held a 40.65 percent shareholding interest. Banco Pastor owns more than 63 percent of the company's shares. The company began to operate in 1919. The company has been subsequently incorporated as publicly quoted firm.
