Founded in Yonkers, New York (USA) in 1853 by Elisha Otis, it pioneered the development of the safety elevator, which used a special mechanism to lock the elevator car in place should the hoisting ropes fail. The company made skyscrapers possible by providing safe mechanical transport to upper floors. It has operations in more than 200 countries and territories. The company runs one of the six Research and Development Centers that OTIS Elevator Co. maintains internationally.
