The company is a Spanish energy firm which owns and operates the nation's gas grid. It was founded in 1975 by the Spanish Government with the aim of creating a nationwide network of gas pipelines. It conducts business from its registered head office which is located in Madrid, Spain. The company owns network of about 10,000 km of gas pipelines. It owns and operates three liquefied natural gas regasification terminals in the country, at Huelva, Barcelona and Cartagena. It provides services involving the delivery of natural gas at the entry points and the use of the operational storage facilities included in the transmission and distribution. The company's mission, in its role as carrier and technical operator, is to ensure that the Spanish gas system works correctly, guarantee the security of supply and encourage competition in a transparent and non-discriminatory manner.
